NoMeansNo

"It's the three infamous arseholes from Canada!" announces bassist Rob Wright before blasting into 'I'm An Asshole', supported by drumming brother John and guitarist Tom Holliston. It's three years since the last NoMeansNo gig in this fair city, and by God, it's been far too long. The wait is worthwhile as the packed crowd at the Underworld gladly and gleefully lap up the Canadian brand of hypnotic philosophical groove-laden jazz hardcore punk.
Their two hour set is heavily steered toward tracks from the last album, All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt, yet sprinkled cherry-picked classics from their extensive and well-loved back catalogue, such as 'No Wrest For The Wicked' and the always present 'Rags And Bones'. 'Big Dick' is welcomed like some glorious disco hit of yesteryear and reveals a slight frustration in the crowd that the songs played tonight haven't been shorter, faster, louder.
Not like that hinders any enjoyment of the gig anyhow. That couldn't happen, NoMeansNo have a faithful crowd. In some ways it's quite odd to see a punk crowd not get bored of old men playing a two hour set that features six-plus minute songs with meticulous musicianship and the odd sprinkling of jazz. Very pleasing, though. Gives even kids with ADD hope.
