Brand New are a band who do not conform. They don't release singles. They don't appear on the from cover of Smash Hits, and it sometimes appears like they'd rather be sitting naked in Soho than be playing shows in certain places.

Luckily tonight is not one such night.

From the opening acoustic bars of "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad", right down to the disappearing feedback of "You Won't Know" the band gives everything and holds back nothing in this two hour event. The stage is backed up by T.V screens that give tonight a feeling of grandeur.

All bases are covered at the gig tonight. As many fans will know, Brand New seem to reinvent themselves with each album, subsequently meaning that a feeling of reluctance to play material of the first album "Your Favorite Weapon" is obvious, resulting in only 5 songs being played tonight with "Soco Amoretto Lime" getting one of the biggest cheers of the night.

The band then goes onto play second album "Deja Entendu" in it's entirety, with each song seguing into the last just like on record. Rare single "The Quiet Things That No-One Ever Knows" is played to perfection while faster numbers "Sic Transit Gloria" and "Jaws Theme Swimming" leave crowd members dazed and confused as fists fly and bodies bundle in time to the music.

As "Play Crack the Sky" end's and frontman Jesse Lacey walks off the stage, the whole room screams for a return as though those on stage were traitors. When the band finally emerges, the Apollo threatens to burst at it's hinges such is the magnitude of the noise.

The encore brings material of recent album "The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me", and also the only downside of the night as tracks that are eagerly anticipated such as the beautiful "Limousene" are replaced by the dragging "Luca"

However, as the night ends and bodies move slowly towards the door, no one who witnessed tonight is feeling hard done by. As words like "Best Gig of The Year" and "Inspiring" flutter through the room, it can be guarenteed that tonight was special.

Great review. I'll have to check them out next time they play around here. I've heard their earlier albums, but i haven't got around to listening to the new one yet. I've heard it's great though.
