John legend is clearly a highly talented guy, but I found it difficult to get fully involved in his show. He strikes me as a 21st century version of a classic crooner but with a modern punchy approach.
His voice and piano playing are outstanding and he was backed by a tight, skillful and well balanced 7 piece band and 3 backing singers and the show was attractively presented and lit. The sold out crowd was ready to go when he arrived in the middle of the audience singing the Redemption song. That was part of the problem for me - he just did not play enough well known songs that kept the audience on the boil. For me he was at his best on classics like 'say you'. The last song Green Light [ready to go right now] was impressive with great audience participation but the middle of the show dragged.
The audience brought him back for an encore in a white suit playing 'Ordinary People' . That's where I related best to his music and it dawned on me that I was listening to the current incarnation of the crooner. Like the earlier versions I expect he will have a long career.
