A few years ago, the underground UK punk scene was a vibrant, bustling place. Every pub backroom, every small venue, every youth centre was full of teenagers and twenty-somethings getting down to the likes of CapDown, The Filaments, Lightyear, Five Knuckle, No Comply and so on. It was amazing: a proper scene. That mini-punk explosion faded away but we may be on the verge of a post-punk wave.

Okay, one band does not a wave make, but it's a place to start. Mr Kamikaze And His Mechanical Animals is the name, and new wave is their game. Playing to a minuscule crowd at the back end of a pub, the speakers burst forth with what could only be described as the post-punk for the millennium. Fusing the new wave staccato rhythms of Devo and Gang of Four to the keyboard sounds of the Epoxies, Polysics and Network (see: Green Day) with a sprinkling of Blur, Mr Kamikaze are interesting, fun and over all, exciting.

The drums pound with tribal beats in an almost mechanical manor whilst the guitars fit tight grooves around them and the vocals melt between shouted lyrics and sweet melodies. They've no "hits" so far, but they are recording an album and as long as the rest of it's peppers with genius songs like "Waiter", "Failing in Love" and "Astronaut" it'll no doubt be a classic.
