London is becoming increasingly dominated by drugged up electro types, flaunting fashion but actually saying very little. It's a relief then, to see an electro-rock act with the DNA of danger.

Alec Empire is, of course, the frontman of Atari Teenage Riot, whom in the 1990s were notorious for putting out records of hardcore techno noise. No-one would say the German singer has mellowed, but his new solo material contains undeniably catchy melodies.

Behind his mirrored shades, Empire radiates cool - he's like Iggy Pop wired up to an electricity pylon.

The new record will inevitably sink without a trace in the mainstream (the singer has missed the boat to become a serious contender) but for his hardcore followers, his mix of techno-rock and politics will be appealing for a long time to come.
