This show could have been so much better!
War brought a 7 piece piece band which could pretty much play anything and had a tight and exciting sound including 2 drummers, a sax and harmonica. The sound was loud and original and the band could rock. However I just wished they concentrated more on playing than on trying to engage the audience. Band leader Lonnie Jordan , while extremely talented, was just too self indulgent for me; yes, 'Spill the Wine' is an indulgent meandering song but this approach was repeated several times by Lonnie including one of the longest band intros I have ever seen which felt almost like 'Intro and Outro' by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band [Google them!].
OK, not a huge back catalog to work with but with a band this good they could done stellar versions of a few other artists' songs. Even the signature 'Low Rider' never quite took off.
A pity, as I could have really liked this band with its funky and tight approach; a missed opportunity capped off without an encore.
