Forty years Ago Today [Sgt Pepper]

Pretty much everyone missed this show which was apparently a one off. What a pity! It was great. Admittedly I'm of the age that grew up listening to the Beatles but this was so much more than a tribute. It was some consummate musicians lovingly recreating the classic album and more. The stars were all great performers in their own right. Denny Laine performed good versions of Go Now and Time to Hide from his Wings days. Bo Bice from American Idol acquitted himself well with his strong voice and did a great version of Witness. He did not overshadow Lou Gramm [Foreigner] who more than held his own with Cold as Ice and Chris Cross who one might have thought as out of pace among the rockers really came into own on Sgt Pepper [more later].
Todd Rundgren stood out with great version of I Saw the Light and generally clowning on Sgt Pepper. He too still has the vocal chops of a great rocker.
The thin audience took a long a long time to warm up but finally got into it during Sgt Pepper. The band then included a 6 piece string section and performed quite beautifully especially Chris Cross on Eleanor Rigby and When I'm 64. By the end the enthusiastic audience wanted more and were rewarded by Strawberry Field and a truly stellar version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
It's pity no one else will see this show again, so run if they do it again.
